Mine at Midnight – Jacquie D’Alessandro
Saving the best for last, Jacquie D’Alessandro brings us Mine At Midnight.
Even Santa’s elves need financial planning and for the last few years Tom Ferrell had looked after Merrie Langston. But it wasn’t until Merrie showed up wearing ‘Kiss Me ‘Til I’m Riled-up Red’ Lipstick with her elf suit that Tom really sat up and took notice.
Christmas wasn’t Tom’s thing, but it was totally Merrie’s. She runs Perfect Parties and Christmas is her busiest time of year. But she’s short one Santa for this season, and before he knows what he’s done, Tom has agreed to fill the suit for a party. But it’s later on, when they’re making cookies together, that Tom and Merrie come to realize that frosting isn’t just for baking.
Jacquie D’Alessandro’s contribution is my favorite of all, with a depth of characters I was surprised to see in a short story. Tom and Merrie just leapt off the page at me, keeping me grinning the entire time. The whole story sparkled like a Christmas tree, making a shining conclusion to this fun anthology. This story is sure to make you watch for more of this author.
While the common thread of the stories is midnight, these three unique novellas will get you in the holiday mood. To start off your Christmas reading this year, this is surely a charmer.
