Back in the days of the old west, it was custom for a woman to marry young. If she didn’t she was considered a “spinster” or an “old maid.” Catherine Campbell is nearing 40 and she has given up hope of ever finding a husband and having a family. She refuses to marry unless she’s truly in love.
Luke Matthews is a drifter of sorts; hooking up with cattle drives to earn money or gambling to increase his earnings so he one day settle down and start a family. He saves a beautiful woman from a raging bull and feels a stirring of something. When a man arrives and whisks her away, Luke’s convinced she’s married. After a little investigation, Luke discovers that the lady he rescued is Catherine Campbell and she’s very single. The man he thought was her husband is actually her father. So Luke decides to pursue Catherine. At first Catherine is flattered, but she knows Luke is much younger and feels that her age will make a difference to him.
Luke finally convinces Catherine to take a chance on him and even finally manages to convince her he wants to marry her. Unfortunately for them, Catherine’s father doesn’t want Catherine marry and finds a way to keep them apart. Torn apart, Luke is jailed for a crime he didn’t commit and Catherine is pushed into the arms of another man. Desperate to reunite with the woman of his dreams, Luke finds his way back, only to find Catherine is engaged to another man. Will Catherine follow her heart or what her father wants for her?
NOTHING LESS THAT LOVE is a very sweet story about true love finding a way. Catherine and Luke are destined to be together, but obstacles keep getting in their way. I am a huge fan of westerns and Janet Mills delivers this one magnificently. Ms. Mills handles the age difference between the two main characters with sensitivity, but yet realistically. NOTHING LESS THAN LOVE is nothing less than a wonderful story that I would recommend.
