Melodi
Mason is staying at a friend's house, to prepare her anthropological
dissertation. One afternoon, she hears a
haunting melody carried by the wind… next thing she knows a roaring
sound is
awakening her, and she seems to have lost track of time.
The sound turns out to be a sports car.
Melodi confronts the driver, who turns out to
be her friend's brother, Darien. Confused as to what that beautiful woman is
doing in his family's house, Darien Stewart suddenly remembers that
this woman
must be his sister Judy's friend, Melodi.
Judy had told him that Melodi would be staying in
the guesthouse (at the
back of the main house) over the winter, to prepare a dissertation. However, he is tired and ends up being rather
rude to her.
Although Darien was rude
when they
first meet, Melodi decides to be a good neighbor and goes over with
breakfast
the next morning. She finds Darien playing
the piano
and as she listens, Melodi realizes he is trying to play a tune that
sounds
like the melody she heard the previous afternoon. Approaching
him, she takes over, playing the
whole song at the piano, a song Darien
was sure he had just started to write.
He stops her playing and then faints.
Realizing that Darien
is feverish, Melodi calls the doctor.
Darien, who is a popular country singer, has come
back to Maine,
trying to come to
terms with his horrible reality: to recover from one of the few viruses
known
to harm the vocal cords. He knows he
will not be able to sing again … but maybe he could start composing.
In the
paranormal/time travel story Melodi's Tune, author Karin Huxman
once
more brings to the reader a beautifully drawn romantic story. Ms. Huxman carefully weaves an enthralling
story, smoothly taking the reader from modern day Maine
to pre-colonial Maine. As the story unravels we get to learn why
Melodi and Darien
are so drawn to each other and how deep their bond truly is. Together, they face danger, a danger in which
their bond plays an important part. The
secondary cast of characters is also very appealing.
Although I am not an expert in Native
American cultures, I found her treatment of that portion of the story
nicely
done. I am a lover of time travel
romance and Melodi's Tune was a treat to read.
I am placing this book in my
"keeper" shelf.
