When the Fairy Dust Settles is a practical handbook on life, written from a mother to a daughter and from the daughter back to her mother. It is a series of letters discussing life issues and methods to deal with them in a Christian forum.
Far from being preachy, this book is well written as it compares the fairy tales we all grow up with to real life and the lessons we should/can learn from these stories. I found the allegories interesting and thought provoking and the format, the letters back and forth, an interesting insight into topics all mothers should discuss with their daughters. It is carefully balanced so that each letter’s opinion, be it the mother’s or the daughter’s, is not always the final word. Each writes their own take on certain situations (like, “is buying a lottery ticket an unacceptable form of gambling?), and while they don’t always agree, they do give you lots of food for thought to consider. When I received this book to review, I didn’t realize at first that it was nonfiction and my first reaction was dread. Normally I find nonfiction dry and difficult to get through. When the Fairy Dust Settles was entertaining, easy to read and I found myself anxious to read the daughter’s/mother’s response to the questions raised in each letter. The subjects are topical for today’s world and lifestyles and they don’t shy away from the tough answers. I found myself anxious to share this book with my own mother and my own daughter. Relevant for all ages, I would highly recommend When the Fairy Dust Settles.
