Watchers on the Hll is the 2nd book in Stephanie Grace Whitson’s Pine Ridge Protraits series.
Charlotte, the once proud daughter of the army surgeon, has lost her abusive husband. Widowed, with all the arrogance stripped away, Charlotte wants to go back to the remote Nebraska cavalry outpost where she grew up. Her husband didn’t become cruel without help. His domineering mother now rules Charlotte with an iron fist. Charlotte struggle to escape the prison the old harridan has created. If she can get home, she must face all the people at the fort she has treated so badly.
Boone, still haunted by the death of his beloved wife, is a friend and hero to everyone but he won’t risk his heart. When Boone befriends Charlotte’s troubled son, she trusts him with the boy, but not with her own heart.
Whitson does a wonderful job of creating characters a reader cares about. Catching up with all those great characters from Secrets on the Wind, the 1st book in the Pine Ridge series was half the fun of Watchers.
The setting of Watchers is Fort Robinson in post civil war Nebraska. Whitson, a Nebraska author, show the rigors of army life and the courage of those early soldiers, but her message of faith is one that rings true in any era.
