Laura Bouvoire was an academic. An English professor for Cherokee College, Laura was up for tenure and despite her hectic schedule had taken, agrees to take on another class at the request of the Dean. She was also a forty-three year old woman whose biological clock was ticking. Which was why she couldn’t believe she’d said yes to her friend Emily about attending a Speaker Forum on past lives. She was way to busy and didn’t believe in that stuff anyway. Little did she know that that Forum would be a catalyst to a big change in her life.
Dante Giovanni had not had an easy life. His father was an alcoholic and had caused him great emotional pain. His mother had passed away when he was just out of high school, leaving him with medical bills and funeral expenses to pay and no time for college. Now, thirty-years old and a computer technician at a repair shop, he’d decided to take charge of his life and go to college to become an engineer. No matter what the degree though, everyone had to take an English course and that was how he ended up in Laura’s class.
For both of them, there was something about the other that was familiar but they couldn’t quite place. Under the guise of professor and student, they make up reasons to meet frequently, thinking it’s just to discuss a book or help with school work, but they both know there is a connection between them that only grows stronger the more they are together. As their attraction increases, so do the vivid dreams for Laura and the creative writing talent for Dante. Laura believes they have a connection to each other from a different time and is desperate to explore that. Dante doesn’t want anything to do with the past, yet is hesitant to move forward to a future with Laura. Not only does he not believe in reincarnation, he has very strong opinions against invetro pregnancies, which Laura has done. Is the passion they feel for each other real, or just a ghost from a past life? Can they overcome their prejudices to finally fulfill the destiny of their love?
A STILL POINT IN TIME brings to light some controversial issues to this past-life romance. The reader is pulled from one end of the spectrum, conservative to liberal, as the characters strive to meet each other in the middle for a life of happy compromise. However, the story is slow to start and often lags with meticulous details not necessary to the plot. The long and difficult journey the characters go through to finally get to their happy ending makes for tedious reading. The concept and writing are well done, but over all, makes time drag on more than anything.
