It hardly seems possible anymore to raise pure kids. In fact, I’d say even to define a young person with the word ‘pure’ would be a stretch. Of course that’s very judgmental and wholly unfair, but even in a shopping mall teens piercings, tattoos, micro-skirts and almost shirts, make it easy to make those assumptions. This book gives us the how to and what fors of raising our children right even in the midst of all the ‘stuff’ going on.
Parents of four adult children authors Richard and Renée Durfield-- give us examples of how they helped their children not only resist sexual temptation but fully accept what God has in store for them. The center of this plan is the ‘key talk’.
The ‘key talk’ is a discussion that takes place between a parent and child. It’s the birds and bees talk our generation got (if we got one at all) covered in prayer and presented with grace, love and honesty. The book includes guidelines for the talk, answers to questions the child might ask, all geared towards giving our kids the right tools to handle the sexual pop culture that permeates our society. The key talk also includes the offer of a ring to the child as a bond between the parent and child that the child pledges to remain sexually pure until they are married and not just because of STD’s, AIDS or accidental pregnancy, (although those are real reasons to abstain) but because God’s gift of our sexuality is intended to be used between a husband and a wife. Somehow that message doesn’t often filter through.
It’s time we got serious about our young people and step beyond our comfort zone to lead the next generation into serving God’s kingdom with knowledge, courage, love and respect for themselves, God, and others.
I highly recommend this book to parents and kids alike. Likewise I believe it would be beneficial for church libraries, youth leaders, and Pastors.
