Where was this book when I needed it years ago? I am the Queen of all Domestically Challenged people and this book addresses EVERY single area I need help in. Piles of papers and books cluttering your rooms? Tupperware containers but no lids? Lids but no containers? How about adding more time to your day? Nah, she doesn’t tell us how to do that but there is a chapter on time management. This book covers every area a home-maker might have trouble with and the author does so with humor (often making jokes about her experiences as a domestically challenged person), grace and scriptures! Even though my children are adults now and out of the home, I was able to put to practice strategies the author outlines in this book.
For instance, she gives us a great Spring Cleaning List, and a Goal setting section. I’ll just tell you the chapter headings:
Chapter one Finding a quiet place. (Yep, how to find time with God even when the whirlwind of life won’t slow down).
Chapter two Digging out.
Chapter three Creating order – Room by Room (yes! Thank you!)
Chapter four The Paper Chase (if you get mail you’ll need this information)
Chapter five Managing Your Time
Chapter six The Occasional Cook
Chapter seven Like a White Tornado.
Chapter eight June’s Touch (she’s talking about our pearl wearing June Clever)
Chapter nine Opening Your Heart and Home (we do all the above to make our homes a place of peace and comfort for not only our family, but as a ministry)
Ms. Salzmann not only gives us practical tips and hints and plans, but she gives us a Going Deeper section at the end of the chapters with questions, scriptures and suggestions that help us well, dig deeper into the subject covered in the chapter.
I can’t say enough about this book, it is funny, extremely helpful, sensitive and smart. I think every new bride should get one, because even if you’re not domestically challenged but more Martha Stewartish – this book will still help you! I’m not kidding, it’s got something for everyone.
I very very highly recommend Making Your Home A Haven by Cyndy Salzmann, I know you won’t be disappointed! You’re going to love it!
