TWELVE TIMES BLESSED is a twelve month look into the life of True Dickson. At the age of 43, True is widowed with two sons and little to look forward to in life except her business, which is very successful. Then on the night of her 43rd birthday, True meets Hank Barrister, who will drastically change her life. Hank owns a successful Creole restaurant and is much younger than True, but the attraction between them is strong. After meeting in February, the two are married in April, True is pregnant by August and the couple is separated by October. Whew…so much happening in so little time.
The fact that Hank is bi-racial is a surprise for True, but she comes to terms with it. True’s mother interferes relentlessly in the relationship, while True whines constantly about her age and her looks. Then there is the constant Christian bashing…there are several avenues for this which could have easily been avoided.
For me, TWELVE TIMES BLESSED was long, slow paced and very disappointing. Hank was a nice guy who should have given True the old heave-ho. True was indecisive and constantly whined, and was never totally honest with Hank. I would definitely try Jacquelyn Mitchard again, because of all the wonderful things I’ve read about her books. But sadly, I cannot recommend TWELVE TIMES BLESSED.
