THE MISTS OF MIDNIGHT by Michelle M. Pillow

After listening to her sister go on and on about the resident ghosts at Rothfield Park, Imogen is summoned by her father.  To her dismay, she finds out that her father has accepted the marriage proposal from Colonel Wallace.  To make matters worse, her father is going to impose a tutor on her.  A tutor recommended by the Colonel.  Her parents want Imogen to marry the Colonel because he is rich and will soon become a Marquis.  Angered and upset, as she had her heart set on another suitor, Imogen runs out to the stable, seeking her mare.  As Imogen rides away, she hears a child's voice but can not see her.  Scared, Imogen keeps riding, with the thick mist covering surrounding her, she can't see a branch, hitting it, and falling to the ground.

When Imogen awakens, she notices that her mother is, as usual, ignoring her.  This does not surprise her as she spends most of the time at odds with her mother, and they barely speak to each other.  As she comes out of her room to have some breakfast, she realizes that the servants are acting odd, so she decides to go out for a walk.  As she sits down to rest, she sees a stranger walking towards her.  As she faces him, believing him to be her newly appointed tutor, she can't help but notice that he is dressed in rather out of fashion clothing.  Dougal Weston is the name of the handsome stranger.

Michelle Pillow's debut novel, The Mists of Midnight is an extremely intriguing paranormal romance.  The story takes place in regency era England, and the author's storytelling captures the reader from page one.  The secrets of the story are slowly unraveled, as Imogen and Dougal fall in love with each other.  Suspenseful at times, Ms. Pillow did a great job in setting an eerie atmosphere, giving it that creepy flavor that lovers of ghost stories like so much.  Imogen is a character that I didn't like that much in the beginning, but she grew from a stubborn and somewhat bratty girl, to a brave young woman.  I must say she was beautifully drawn.  Dougal makes for a wonderful hero.  The ending of the story is beautiful and it brought tears to my eyes.  The Mists of Midnight will certainly appeal to lovers of paranormal romance in a historical setting.  I definitely recommend it.
