DOWN CAME A BLACKBIRD by Barbara Karmazin

Cait is convinced to go on a mining expedition on an asteroid called “Pot of Gold”. She joins mostly because she believes that her ancestors, the Sidhe, came from another planet. Cait feels that the asteroid is what is left of that planet. But this trip isn’t going to be an uneventful fact finding mission. With lust flowing freely over her from two different men, a stowaway and her pet, and a breach in security, a simple expedition will turn into a dangerous adventure. Will Cait be able to convince the two men she’s fallen in love with to share her as is the tradition in her family? Will she be able to protect her young stowaway? Will she find proof of her sisterline’s heritage without turning her family into lab rats?

As a romance story, this book lacked any type of feeling or connection to the characters. Due to the overly technical explanations of everything, I was left feeling completely detached from any of the emotions that should be felt in a romance novel. To me there was no real connection between Cait, Indio, or Tiny. One moment they are talking and the next one of them is having sex… and suddenly there is love. The flow of this story was disjointed, with the reader left thinking that she must have missed many pages. Scenes would change, placing the reader in the middle of some already-in-progress action without much explanation. When there is an explanation, it is done in a reporting “just the facts” manner. This book is a (very) scientifically detailed story, and as such I’m sure it must be good. However, as technically scientific fiction is not my cup of tea, I can’t say I enjoyed the book and certainly would not recommend it as a romance novel.
