What do you want out of your life, what do you believe about yourself? Who will you be? What matters most? It is precisely these moments (designed often by God) that help us discover who we are inside. They test us, they refine us, they make us, they break us, and then leave us strong in our broken places. We are forever changed once we face those moments and choose which path in life we will take.” –from WHAT MATTERS MOST
WHAT MATTERS MOST is a ten-part devotional book for women based on the Song of Solomon in the Bible. It has ten different sections with topics like: Choices, Sex and Love, Identity, and Balance, just to name a few. It addresses issues like how you can keep your identity when you marry and have children? What must you give up in order to regain your identity if you’ve already lost it? How do you get help before you collapse?
There is a short section to fill out after each devotional, so you can meditate on and apply things that Renita J. Weems mentions in the book.
I first started WHAT MATTERS MOST in May, then the devotional that we normally use for family devotions arrived in the mail, and I noticed that it also was based on the Song of Solomon. I was interested in how the two different devotionals, by two different publishers would compare, so I postponed reading WHAT MATTERS MOST so I could read it simultaneously with the other one. Almost immediately, I noticed some major differences in how the author of WHAT MATTERS MOST believes and how the author of the other devotional believes. Some of the differences were so huge it was like chasms were between them. So, as a warning, if you attend a more conservative church—as I do—you might have some problems with this book.
On the other hand, I can see how WHAT MATTERS MOST could really minister to women. If you are having trouble grasping your feminist nature and need help deciding who you are and what you want out of life, then WHAT MATTERS MOST is the devotional for you. It will help you pin point the different hats you have to wear in your life, and show you how to put some of them back on the shelf so you can be the woman God intended you to be.
WHAT MATTERS MOST is the ideal gift for any woman in your life—moms, coworkers, sisters, daughters, or friends, and it is easy to carry with you.
