THE SPANIARD'S REVENGE by Susan Stephens

Xavier Martinez Bordiu’s mind is set on revenge. He blames the Ford family for his brother’s untimely death. When Sophie Ford comes to work for Xavier, he decides to exact take his revenge by seducing her. Sophie’s beauty surprises Xavier, and he soon realizes revenge can be sweet.

Sophie’s life has been far from the comfortable existence Xavier and others think. She still struggles with her father’s abusive treatment of her and her mother. Sophie’s beauty and confidence hides her true innocence. When Sophie sees Xavier again, she’s frightened by and yet attracted to his brooding sensuality. Will she be able to resist his charms?

Xavier and Sophie have a long road to true communication and trust. They have many road blocks, including Sophie’s want to be fiancé Henry Whitland and Anna Groes, Xavier’s former lover. Each of these characters complicates the budding relationship. Xavier’s discovery of Sophie’s innocence and her fear of him, changes his attitude towards her. He begins to realize she’s worthy of his respect and love. Will he be able to forget his revenge and go after the best thing that’s ever happened to him?

Lust, innocence lost, romance, true love and misunderstandings are all part of THE SPANIARD’S REVENGE. I didn’t really connect with this couple until the end of the book. Although it’s the basis of the story, I felt Xavier’s need for revenge got in the way of the sensuality of the story. Xavier didn’t truly appreciate Sophie until the very end of the book and that took away from their initial pairing.

I felt the book was choppy and went off in directions that didn’t seem to fit. Conversations between the hero and heroine would trail off into some odd place and I would be lost. It may be worth a read though, since love does prevail in the end.
