After a very long absents from her family Lilith Harker has return home to help them. With only five remaining members, she must help them gain allies in a world that may not accept their “mutated genes”. Along with her oath brothers Shiloh and Nathanial, Aunt Elizabeth and Uncle Percy, Lilith has decided the new health clinic and its doctor will become that ally.
Dr. Bridget O’Keefe has accepted Kurt Walker’s job offer to be the sole doctor in the little town of Lacrimas. He is paying her enough money to help her pay off her school debts. Once that is done her plan is to work at the top genetics research lab. When she meets Lilith and Shiloh, Bridget feels a strong pull towards them. However, when she comes in contact with Nathanial, what she feels can’t be explained. The lives of Bridget, Nathanial, Shiloh, Lilith and Kurt are about to become completely intertwined and filled with danger and corporate espionage.
Covenants is a book filled with it all! There is such descriptive writing about the land and the people filling it that I felt as if I was standing next to the main characters of this book. Each “actor” in this story is so focused on that they all feel like main characters. The heartfelt love that builds between Bridget and Nathanial is sweet and romantic, while the love between Bridget and Shiloh is on a different, lower, scale. Lilith and Kurt’s antagonistic relationship added a lot of humor, in my opinion, to the story. It made me want a book of their own so that I could see them get together! The adventure was so fast paced and exciting, I was hard pressed to put the book down for any length of time. However, to me, the main focus in this story is the relationships between each character and how they develop, as well as the necessity of family and friends to the Harker family. This is filled with bonds that are forged and never forgotten, as well as, family debts to be paid. While I had expected more of a romance story than I had gotten, I was not left feeling empty. Covenants is so filled with other, well-written, aspects that I had that happy “good book” smile on my face after reading it. For a change of pace, this is definitely a must read.
