LUCK AND A PRAYER by Cynthia Cooke

Under-cover detective, Willa Barrett is bound and determined to revenge her father’s death. When she finally has solid evidence, her father’s killers are close on her heels. Through a heart pounding chase and fall, she ends up on top of personable youth pastor, Jeff. Unbeknownst to Jeff she hides the evidence in his back pocket intending to retrieve it later.

Youth Pastor Jeff MacPhearson is in the big city to bring home a runaway youth group member Tracy. Jeff intends to bring the ‘lost sheep’ home and head out to a youth retreat where he hopes to find out why the troubled teen felt led to flee. But, before he knows what’s happening he’s knocked flat, a woman lies on top of him, and all he really is aware of is her vanilla scent and the stars dancing from the ringing in his head.

Willa ends up at the youth retreat in the woods trying to get the evidence she’d hidden, but she doesn’t know the last thing, or the first thing for that matter, about camping. She’s street smart not woodsy smart. Luckily Pastor Jeff knows his way around the great outdoors.

Willa and Jeff make a great couple (opposites attract!) and we root for them all the way through to the happy ending. The plot is unique, the writing is fresh (I’d heard that term often but didn’t really understand it until I read this book; Ms. Cooke has a welcome newness to her writing.) Of course I recommend this book, and look forward to more from this talented author.
