Elizabeth Simmons eagerly accepts an invitation to travel to Arizona Territory to care for an ‘ill’ relative. When she arrives it’s not long before the patient shows her true self and Elizabeth doubts she should have come at all.
Michael O’Rourke traveled to Arizona Territory not for fame or fortune but to tell his carousing father about Jesus Christ. Michael’s godly mother had taught her children about God, Jesus, and the way a Christian should live. The example they saw of their father was anything but Christian – especially his extramarital affairs. When Michael finds his father in the arms of one of the town’s painted women he is certain his father will never change, and Michael wonders if he should move on.
Industrious Elizabeth is set on opening a business of her own. She believes mining supplies will be needed and sets out to do just that. But how can she with her injured Aunt demanding all the attention? And, when the aunt isn’t, the uncle has Elizabeth waiting on him and his cronies as if she were a maid. Will she have the gumption and resources to pursue her dream?
Both Michael and Elizabeth begin to doubt why they are in Arizona Territory but God never falters. His reason for them to be there is very clear and presents itself in an unusual manner. It’s not easy to live in this place; they face inclement weather, unruly people and an almost lawless society, but they stay. Will God show them what He has for them to do before they give up?
This is the first book I’ve read by author Carol Cox and I was both enthralled and enchanted. The slim volume is ripe with suspense, humor, mystery and of course, romance. I fell in love with sensitive Michael and rooted for spunky Elizabeth. Secondary characters don’t disappoint either. These shorter books are sometimes choppy or hurried, Land of Promise is neither – it is the perfect length to tell the sweet story.
I highly recommend Land of Promise.
