EKATERINA by Susan Downs and Susan Warren

“International Conspiracy. Unexpected Treasure. The powerful story of family.”

Kat (Ekaterina) Moore is on a mission. A mission that will, if successfully completed, unravel the knots of mystery and secrecy surrounding her family. Raised by her grandfather who once fought on Russia’s land, Kat receives a package and inside a key. She leaves the safety of her grandfather’s home, to travel to her ancestral home – Russia, to seek the lock of the ancient key. Before she’s even safe across the boarder, Kat finds the journey is going to more treacherous than she ever thought. Did she follow God’s direction correctly or has He simply taken leave of her while she’s there?

Somewhat secretive FSB Captain Vadeem Spasonov, makes it his mission to protect Kat while she’s in Russia, whether she wants him to or not. Captain struggles with issues of his own past. But, even Vadeem can’t protect her heart from falling in love – with him. And, as the story twists we wonder if these two will ever fulfill what seems like destiny.

The plot of this first book in The Heirs of Anton series spikes and sloops, until we’re almost dizzy. Authors Susan May Warren and Susan Downs are masterful crafters however, so we are never uncomfortable or lost in the tangles of the engaging story.

Certainly a page turner, Ekaterina will delight those readers who love a lot of intrigue and mystery with their romance. The completely satisfying ending makes the journey so worthwhile. (Although, you’ll wish you read slower so you wouldn’t reach the end so fast.)

Both authors have first hand experience with Russia and its people; you can read more about them at their web-sites www.susanamaywarren.com and www.susankdowns.com.

Ekaterina Moore has always known she was different. She just doesn’t fit into her family. When she receives a mysterious package in the mail, containing nothing except an old key and a faded photograph of two women standing beside a grave, Kat’s interest is piqued. She decides to take a trip to Russia to discover who she is.

Her ex-boyfriend is against the trip, telling Ekaterina she’ll just get into trouble. Her grandfather also has doubts. But Ekaterina goes despite their advice. From the moment she sets foot on Russian soil though, things start going wrong. She’s taken back for questioning at the airport when her key set off their scanners and a man comes back to rescue her.

Captain Vadeem Spasonov has been tracking an international smuggler for years. He knows the smuggler is working with someone and he is suspicious of Ekaterina. She seems to know the smuggler quite well. He decides to trail her to see if she might lead him to her accomplices.

Soon it becomes apparent that someone wants what Ekaterina has—or her life in the process. What does the key belong too? Why is it so important? What age old mystery is Ekaterina about to find herself smack in the middle of?

EKATERINA is an excellent story. Full of Russian history, at first I thought it wouldn’t be so good. But I was quickly pulled into the book and couldn’t put it down. I had to find out what happened next. I cried with Vadeem when he was forced to face the demons of his past. And I wished Ekaterina would get a break as she tried to talk to uncommunicative people.

I highly recommend EKATERINA for a wonderful read. The first book in The Heirs of Anton series it is exciting and sure to please. Pick it up today for a wonderful mix of romance and intrigue. $12.95. 280 pages.
