‘Ae Fond Kiss – Romantic Scottish Songs’ is the latest CD from Celtic
performers Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee, who specialize in traditional and
original Maine music, Celtic chamber music and seasonal Celtic harp
music.
On
this recording the duo have focused on romantic sounding Celtic pieces,
several by Robert Burns, such as MY LOVE IS LIKE A RED, RED ROSE and
BONNIE DOON, and added such treats as Fred’s ARMS AROUND MY JO, a
sensitive instrumental piece and Julia’s MY BONNIE GREENWOOD LADDIE, a
tender story of love.
The pair have infused their own interpretation in their vocals – words
that come to mind are emotional and inspired. Julia’s voice has been
described aptly as ‘haunting’ – her range and tenderness are a joy to
listen to. Fred’s deep voice adds such character to one of my favorites on
the CD – CA’ THE YOWES, again by Burns.
They’ve blended their voices with their obvious talent with multiple
instruments – Julia’s harp and Fred’s guitar, violin, viola and
woodwinds. The result is an enjoyable compilation that’s sure to please
lovers of folk music, who will forgive the occasional slip off-key as a
trade for the real emotion evident in the voices. The real joy would be
watching this pair perform live.
