Mark Callahan is ex-military, now private gun for hire
with lots of skeletons in his closet that have parked more than his
share of chips on his shoulders. Including the one in the person of his
wife, Annabelle.Annabelle Monroe is ex-military, now private gun for
hire. Just her luck she runs into her “see you sometime” husband while
on a mission.
Living apart and coming together in hotel rooms across the country
isn’t enough to hold a marriage together, or at least the lack of
commitment isn’t. And as Mark and Annabelle come to this realization,
they also stumble upon a killer trying to take out the members of their
elite military team years after it has disbanded. But the highly
trained team continues to work together effectively once they discover
the threat to their “family.” Can Mark and Annabelle save the team?
Can they save their commitment-free marriage?
The action in Always Look Twice is non-stop which almost makes up for
the farce of a marriage between Mark and Annabelle. Fueled almost
entirely by lust and physical attributes, I nearly put this book down
until the action kicked in. Ms. Dawson has written a taut espionage
thriller, and the relationship between Mark and Annabelle is well penned
once we get to the subplot, which is the espionage. As the story opens,
however, to consider that hot sex is enough to hold a marriage together
didn’t sit well with me, and for two 30-year old characters to be unable
to control their libidos didn’t work for me, either. As the story
progressed and Ms. Dawson developed other aspects of their relationship,
I was more involved with Mark and Annabelle. I would have liked to see
those other aspects play a more prominent role in what binds Mark and
Annabelle together, with the sex as an added benefit. All in all,
Always Look Twice was action packed, with cleverly developed twists at
every corner.
