A novel that
begins with a woman running off a cliff certainly grabs one’s attention
immediately. August St. Claire’s death on graduation night is blamed on
Clay Moorehead, her boyfriend, and he is sent to prison. Released after
ten years, he returns home to a small dairy town in Fallon County and
tries to overcome his neighbors’ animosity.
His boyhood friend Seth and Seth’s sister, Merrily, support and
encourage Clay in his adjustment to life outside prison. At their
ten-year high school reunion, a surprising and incredible twist changes
the story line completely.
The author’s descriptions of farm life and the Amazon are detailed and
interesting. His characters are well-developed and believable, and the
themes of forgiveness, redemption, and love are touching and thought
provoking. I look forward to reading more of Barbera’s work.
