In this book of
Lady of Liberty Series the reader will learn about Martha Custis
Washington. She’s the woman who married the father of America, George
Washington.
1757 - Martha Custis has just buried her first husband, she has seen so
much death, how much more is she going to have to handle? She has a
plantation to run, children to raise, and she is determined to do
everything herself, which is unheard of in 1757. Men don’t think women
have any brains in their heads and that they needed a man. On a chance
encounter she meets George Washington, someone who takes the time to
listen to what she has to say.
Martha marries George and finds herself in the limelight of his
popularity. She is more comfortable behind the scenes. When the
Revolutionary War starts, she is once again taking care of things alone,
while her husband is off fighting for freedom. When she and the
children are forced to flee Mount Vernon, some claimed she turned her
back on the patriot cause.
Martha had to sacrifice a lot of her personal life for George’s very
public one. Before she died she burned all their letters to each other.
She really was a private person. Some say without Martha there would
not have been a George. Washington called Martha his other self. Moser
does an outstanding job with Martha. In the back of the book there is a
section Fact or Fiction telling you which part of the books are indeed
factual.
