Miss Deirdre Cantor has wanted only two things in life: to get away from
her conniving aunt and to marry the one man who’s fascinated her since
she’s first laid eyes on him. In order to escape her aunt, she must
fulfill her grandfather’s vow to marry a duke. Thankfully, the man she’s
loved from afar had that distinction. Being known as The Beast of
Brookhaven did not put her off. When her cousin tossed him over to marry
another, she knew she had to make her move before someone else snatched
him up. The last thing Calder, the Marquis of
Brookhaven expected was to have the beautiful Deirdre Cantor propose to
him. After his last wedding debacle, he wanted nothing more to do with
women. But enchanted by her beauty and the irresistible urge to claim
her as his own, against his better judgment, he said yes. A simple
miscommunication started a war between them that neither was willing to
back down and admit defeat. Only when the life they were building was
threatened, did they realize somethings were more important than
winning.
I loved Calder and think he makes the perfect duke
and hero. Deirdre started off childish in her emotions and actions.
Celeste Bradley managed to show how she grew throughout the book into a
likable character. Things really flew along until the end, both with
great scenes and emotions. It wasn’t until the last scene where Deirdre
reverted to back to her original self that I felt a little let down.
Thankfully, a few twists changed my mind, making the second book in the
Heiress Brides a good addition to the series.
