When Elizabeth
(Beth) Gunnar returns as a teacher to her alma mater in Delaware, she
finds that her fear of failure is still with her. Books remain her
solace and escape. Twenty years ago, Beth, two other girls, and three
boys were fast friends. They called themselves the “Barbarians,”
although they were all good students, fairly innocent during the late
seventies. One of their favorite teachers disappeared under mysterious
circumstances. Although they are told that he had a heart attack, they
know the truth – or do they? Upon Beth's return, she connects with old
friends and old questions arise again.
Satchel Queen, a
boarding student, is Beth's pupil who needs, and receives, her special
attention. Satchel feels rejected by her mother after her remarriage and
resents her stepfather.
Alternating
between present and past, and interspersed with Satchel's essays, EVERY
SECRET THING contains themes of faith, friendship, trust, and
forgiveness. Tatlock's characters are interesting, unique, and real.
Reader discussion questions at the end of the book are helpful for
reading groups or for private reflection.
