Short and sharp aptly describes both LOVE IN SHADOW and its heroine the fairy-woman Shadow. This fantasy is spun around how love transcends all obstacles and blooms in the strangest of circumstances finding nourishment in good friendship regardless of circumstances.
Shadow works for Lon James to help him foil attacks from her kind while transporting supplies in Brogdon. In the years in his employ, despite past tragedies a strong bond forms between the human and the fairy, regardless of the less that sterling reputation of fairy-folk. This bond is put to test by circumstances and relatives before transforming into love in the purest sense of the word.
Sonja Foust's novella makes for a good short read and she manages to pack this fantasy with some very real problems that plague human relationships: differences, family interference, misleading perceptions, and problems that the action of few cause for the rest when people judge too soon.
The brevity is both an advantage and a disadvantage for while it packs a solid punch being so crisp it leaves you wanting in the details department. But considering it is a fantasy details really are not essential. Overall entertaining.
