SEEKING WHOM HE MAY DEVOUR by Fred Vargas

A small, sleepy town in the French Alps became center news when wolves terrorized the populous. When sheep become ravaged, people rage, and whispers of a werewolf begin circulating. The death of a close friend bound three people together and they investigate the unlikely charges, desperate to find the real killer. Newscaster’s spread terror to other towns and the wolf soon followed. For revenge, and to catch a killer, the group set off to find the truth. But when the truth becomes conflicting and more complicated, they turn to an old friend, Adamsburg.

Commissaire Jean-Baptiste Adamsburg lived his whole life in France. Raised in the country, he knew the true fear wolves can have on a person’s life. When an old, but not forgotten lover contacted him for help, he couldn’t refuse. One, because he still had feelings for her and two, because the mystery itself intrigued him. But when more people turn up dead, more cattle slaughtered, the pressure increased and with it, the danger. Now they have become the hunted but was it the wolf or the humans that they had to watch out for. For not everyone wanted to learn the truth.

The book opened slowly, setting up the mystery and setting. The middle of the book slacked off and lacked suspense to keep the reader fully engaged. The tension didn’t pick up in the book until the end. Though all the characters were interesting, the lead characters weren’t revealed until three-fourths the way through the book, not enough time to get to know them. Seeking Whom He May Devour read a bit dry, but the wonderful setting and satisfying conclusion was worth the read.
