Johanna Holland was the stereotypical librarian. She was the old maid still living at home with no hopes in sight for marriage or change. Johanna’s fortieth birthday party was being held at the library. Her Aunt Margaret like always, had come up with a great way to embarrass her. This year it was an old woman who lived in the shoe birthday cake. Johanna to avoid further embarrassment ducked out of the room with the excuse of getting more paper products. Johanna slips on the wet library floor and is saved by Sam Littleton. They chat for a few minutes just long enough for her to learn he’s researching Papua New Guinea. Sam is a retired surgeon and is called to serve.

Johanna is slowly pushed out of her comfort zone. Her aging parents decide to move into a retirement community leaving Johanna to find housing on her own. She beings to fall in love with Sam, but still doesn’t feel his calling. Sam convinces Johanna to at least give the missionary life a try.
Johanna slowly emerges from her shell like a caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly in spring. Johanna realizes that our plans for ourselves aren’t always God’s plans for us. This book taught me so much about how God can direct our paths even when we are unaware. I learned we always need to be open to change and not box ourselves in.
