Rose Fletcher is headed home, although she doesn’t consider South Carolina her true home anymore. Rose is a lobbyist and a diehard career woman. She can’t do anything without her Blackberry. As Rose heads towards South Carolina from Washington D.C. she flashes back to her younger days. The course of her travel leads her to different locations and many pit stops for gas and other necessities. At almost each stop something reminds her of another piece of what she thinks is her better forgotten childhood. You learn that Rose has been cheating on her husband of nine years. She somehow has twisted her childhood to be something that she can’t stand. She wants to see herself in the future as a strong self assured Rose but in doing so loses who the true Rose is.
Rose’s journey parallels her life. She starts young and innocent and decides she wants better for herself. Like so many of us she loses her focus on God and goes only for her desires. And it’s through God’s slow prodding that she is brought back onto the path of righteousness. She learns that even though her life is in shambles that God can resurrect even that.
For me this book was like taking a trip. The strong southern heritage of Rose is undeniable. I loved reading the southern dialects and culture. Rose’s life journey was summed up in her short trip from Washington DC to South Carolina. The journey brought Rose back to where she belonged in her relationship with her Savior and family.
