Four sisters, although living far apart, are still emotionally close to each other and their parents. Candy, the youngest at 21, is a super model with a sweet personality. Tammy, 29, produces a hit television show based in L.A. Sabrina, the oldest at 34, is a New York divorce lawyer whose cases have made her leery of a committed relationship. Annie, 26, lives in Florence, Italy, where she studies art. The sisters manage to come home to their parents’ house in Connecticut at Thanksgiving and Christmas, and always for their mother’s Fourth of July party. This year the party is cancelled because of an accident that takes their mother’s life and leaves Annie blind.
Sabrina and Candy give up their apartments and move into a brownstone that they lease for a year. Annie lives with them and, with their love and support, slowly starts her life anew. Tammy eventually gives up her plush job and joins them.
As always, Steel’s characters are interesting and unique. Even the three dogs have individual temperaments and personalities. I found this a slow read at times because of the inclusion of so many everyday details, but the author’s portrayal of the sisters’ closeness, even when in conflict and under stress, makes SISTERS a worthwhile read.
