Her childhood traumatized by death of her parents, Morgan Winter only consolation was the police caught the killer. Nearly twenty years later, that truth fell apart. The police had it wrong; the killer was still on the loose. For the sake of her sanity, Morgan decided to take an active role in the investigation. The first order of business was to hire a private detective. The next was to dig into her past, and her nightmares, to try and remember a time she had fought so hard to forget.
Pete ‘Monty’ Montgomery used to be a police office but said good-bye to pursue a life as a private investigator. When one of his old cases unraveled before his eyes, he couldn’t help feel responsibility for the little girl whose life was destroyed. So when she requested he continue the investigation, Monty jumped in with both feet. To help things along, Monty asked his son, Lane, to help with the investigation. As a photo journalist for the government and local newspaper, Lane Montgomery knew how to find answers in any picture. Upon first meeting Morgan, Lane fell hard and was willing do anything to make the hauntingly beautiful woman feel safe once more.
The pressure rose when she and her adopted family became targeted by the killer. The new threats and warnings told her to stop or she would be sorry. In order to find answers, the three of them search from the underside of the city to the high regions of the government. When the truth comes out, will Morgan finally have the answers she needed to let go of the past and start her life over? Or will her world be plunged into a new nightmare she had no hope to escape?
Andrea Kane has a unique way of telling a story. The opening captured my attention and pulled me into Morgan’s life. Though the writing style of Dark Room meanders a bit, it doesn’t make the story any less intense. The pace doesn’t make you breathless or feel rushed, but instead, it gives you time to connect with the characters. The sensual tension between Lane and Morgan really stood out and added another dimension to the book. A touch of romance, family drama, a good mystery and a wonderful ending made this book an enjoying read.
