Carolyn Mathers used to be a cop, but when her fiancé mysteriously left her at the altar, she became obsessed with finding out what happened to him. Her obsession and her job as a cop conflicted, so now she’s a Private Investigator. Her job is not as exciting as it once was, but it gives her a chance to pursuer her search for her long lost fiancé. Although everyone else has assumed that Gray just became a jerk overnight and left her, Carolyn refuses to believe this. Lately though, she has begun to try to accept the fact that he might be dead.
Gray hadn’t wanted to leave Carolyn at the altar, he simply had not had another choice. On the night of his bachelor party, he’d been assaulted by a vampire, and was now living a half-life – one that he does not want to allow Carolyn to see. Gray has been a bit obsesses with Carolyn ever since his “change”, and he frequently keeps an eye on her, although he has never shown himself. But, when something endangers her life, Gray’s protective instincts take over and he can no longer hide.
Although Gray is a vampire, he’s not a Killer, nor is he a Guardian. The Guardians, a group of vampire protectors who forgo feasting on human blood, have him under watch. Other vampires, those who kill humans for blood, are using him as a scapegoat. With both the Killers and the Guardians watching his every move, and Carolyn dogging his heels, Gray’s life becomes increasingly dangerous.
Jenna Black, author of WATCHERS IN THE NIGHT, has crafted a unique story. Her creation of a contemporary world of vampires – the Killers and the Guardians – is quite unusual. Although the story does not end as “happily ever after” as most romance novels, it is still intriguing and Black’s characters are quite realistic.
WATCHERS IN THE NIGHT was, over all, an enjoyable read. Fans of vampire-romance will certainly want to take a look at this one.
