SUMMER OF LIGHT by W. Dale Cramer

** Reader's Choice Award **

“Summer of Light” is about the Brannigan family. Mick Brannigan, the head of the household, works in construction while his wife Layne works at a law firm. Layne had done the stay at home mom bit until all of the children were almost of school age. Now that four year old Dylan wasn’t working out in daycare they had to find an alternative childcare. It would have been easier to do if Dylan hadn’t been diagnosed with sensory integration dysfunction. Dylan would sometimes do odd things because his senses were all out of whack. The doctors agreed with therapy and treatment he could outgrow his problem. Layne thinks Mick should stay home with them, but Mick an old fashioned kind of guy simply believes that a father must provide. Layne says she will pray about the situation and before long Mick ends up in a freak accident at work. All of a sudden Mick is left at home during the day to take care of their three children, and has to find something to keep himself occupied.

I couldn’t put this book down. It was incredible to read the stay at home parent’s perspective from the dad’s side. Throughout the book you watch Mick’s relationship not only with God grow, but his family as well. W. Dale Cramer adds just enough humor to keep you laughing and waiting to see what happens next. One of my favorite scenes is when Layne asks Mick how often he mops the kitchen floor. He responds nonchalantly by saying whenever it pulls his socks off. The book is about an every day family with every day problems and how with God we all are someone special.
