Grey Lawson just released from prison heads to Winfield and the home of his aunt Elsie. It’s twilight as he starts the long walk from the bus station to his aunt’s house. A lone car passes by so he sticks his thumb out in hopes of a ride. Little did he know the passing car was Deputy Trish Franklin. Trish decided it was best not to let a vagrant continue to thumb rides in her town and pulled over. She was shocked to see it was Grey, when she had been on her way to warn her father Grey had been released. She asked Grey where he was headed and without a word started the drive to his aunt’s house. She hadn’t gone far when she heard squealing tires and the sounds of an accident. She went around the blind curve and found her brother’s truck had collided with a deer. The deer had entered the front windshield and had her brother, Andy, pinned to his seat. Trish radioed for help, and then went to assess the damage. Grey came to help but realizing the seriousness of the situation said he would hold pressure over the open wound while Trish drove them to the emergency room. After reaching the hospital Andy was quickly rushed to surgery, and Trish was told to notify the family. Grey and Trish were praying when Trish’s family rushed in and demanded answers from Trish, without ever noticing Grey. Grey cleaned himself up and started the long walk to his aunt’s once more. Meanwhile upstairs in the surgical waiting room Trish’s family had questions for her about Grey. Trish’s father, Noah, got very upset and understandably so when Grey, years earlier, had killed his brother and Darleen Valliere while drunk in a car accident.
Things heat up quickly when there’s a near miss accident in the same manner and almost same location as Grey’s previous accident. Someone has it out for him, but with so many people upset to see him back in town it could be almost anyone. Even after Grey has a hand in helping locate a missing child, the Franklin family has trouble accepting him. The town didn’t realize that Grey had changed while in prison. He was no longer a drunk but a born again Christian. He had turned his life over to God and learned the Serenity Prayer and began applying it to his daily life. Through the book Grey applies the twelve lessons from the Serenity Prayer over and over again.
For me this book was fabulous. I loved getting to revisit some of the same characters from “Dangerous Seasons”. It was amazing to watch Grey lean on his faith and even though it seemed the whole town was against him he chose to stick to his principles. I didn’t have a clue who was behind the reoccurring duplications of Grey’s accident until the very end. The book held my attention and kept me longing for more!
