IN THE COMPANY OF SECRETS by Judith Miller

April, 1892

Olivia Mott has never liked to lie. She has been forced to lie up to her hairline thanks partly to Lady Charlotte Spencer, the daughter of wealthy parents. Charlotte is extremely spoiled, she is under the impression her parents will understand. They venture off to America to Pullman, Illinois. The place where the Pullman Palace Sleeper cars were manufactured. Their adventure begins with one small lie.

Olivia’s dream has always been to be a great chef, with Lady Charlotte’s help she is hired to be assistant chef at Hotel Florence. She quickly becomes the favorite of the Head chef, even after he learns the truth, Olivia can’t cook. Someone else has also noticed Olivia, Samuel Howard, Mr. Pullman’s top man. He has his own list of lies he need to keep straight, he wants Olivia to become his wife. He undermines Olivia and the people she is close to. Olivia has her sights set on someone else. Someone of her class from the working class, she has no desire to become a wife to a wealthy man. She can’t marry someone she truly does not love.

This was a charming story. Nothing seems to be the way it is, people are not the way they appear. There are layers and layers of storyline to pull apart and determine what is true and what isn’t true. It also leaves unanswered questions, which this reviewer hopes are answered in the next book. Judith Miller is a most talented author. This is the first book in her new series, Postcards from Pullman. Don’t miss this book.
