Divorced David Brooke, pastor and editor of Hollyhill’s once a week newspaper, has his home filled with family, friends and problems. His pregnant out-of-wedlock daughter Tabitha is home, his fourteen year-old daughter Jocie is beginning high school, Aunt Love’s forgetfulness is becoming more prominent, and now he’s taking in Wes, an injured newspaper worker. David’s full plate certainly doesn’t need to be knocked out of balance. Or does it? Is there room for lovely Leigh and romance?
Jocie Brooke’s new friend, Noah Hearndon has added complications to her life as well. Noah is black, and in 1964, small town Hollyhill is just on the cusp of integration. Her friendship with this new boy might cause problems. Her photographs of the KKK march certainly don’t help.
Packed with quirky characters, this novel shifts from person to person and tells a story of small town life seamlessly. The romance factor is portrayed in a sweet light, and while there are political issues at stake, they are not over dramatized. Good read!
