Shifters had strict rules. As the king of his kind, Kabril had to follow them a bit closer than most. So when it came time to marry, he must accept the woman the Oracle had chosen. Normally, he wouldn’t mind. Except, this time, the Oracle had made a mistake. There had to be. No way was he meant to mate with a substandard human.
Normally a shy person, Rayna Vogel forced herself to greet her new neighbors. More comfortable around the animals she photographs, the prospect did not appeal to her at all. That was until she met Kabril. From the first moment she set her eyes on him, she knew she wanted to have him in her bed. Unfortunately, she wasn’t the kind of girl to jump into a strange man’s bed.
The instant he caught a glimpse of her, he knew he wanted her. In a twist of fate, Kabril learned Rayna wasn’t his mate. It didn’t matter. As the days passed, the attraction became so strong, he could barely contain himself. Desperate, he planned to make his move. The only thing that stopped him cold was a surprise attacked from his age old enemy, a separate breed of shifters. Targeted, Rayna was abducted. Kabril has to make a decision. For the future of his kind, he needed to find his true mate. But could that would mean leaving Rayna to her fate. The choice could rip him from the thrown and toss his kingdom into chaos.
Mandy Roth beautifully captured her characters on the page. Kabril and Rayna has such chemistry, I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next. The tension between all the characters was masterfully done and the unexpected humor between them made me chuckle more than once. In a few places, I tripped over the wording. It pulled me a little out of the story, but thankfully, the characters were so charming, I eagerly read onward. King of Prey is a unique enough story to make me pick up the book but it was the characters themselves who won my heart.
