Julian has been looking for his blood mate for a long time, and has nearly given up hope of finding her after years of searching. When he’s unexpectedly taken by surprise by a group of fanatics, he knows his first priority is to escape. They plan on experimenting on him to find out his vampire secrets to a long life, then killing him, and he's not about to let either one happen. He’s getting ready to escape, when one of them brings a girl that seems to be fragile and deathly ill. Once he sees her fully, he realizes that she is his mate, and she is very fragile because of her need to supply him with blood. Now he’s determined to rescue them both, he’s just got to figure out how to do that and keep both of them alive. With her brother’s help he just might succeed.
I thought it was going to be this exciting, sexy thriller and it turned out to be a lot different than what I expected. While there is a lot going on, the story is not very clear when it comes to the society and how Julian has to live, and I still don’t think I really understand it. Julian and Serina didn’t have a lot of chemistry together, and I thought Serina was a bit too passive and one dimensional for my tastes. I thought that she could have been a little more active in the story with her own destiny, and a little more forceful in her personality. There is a lot of blood letting, it’s an integral to the story as mates produce more blood than normal people and need to be bled regularly or they become weak and die. The ending is not something you expect out of a romance, because it’s definitely not a happy one, although this is a continuing series and the ending may be resolved in later books. Who knows?
