Gilrohan has found himself in a lot of trouble… he’s currently in the dungeon of a man who was supposed to greet him with open arms. After all, he’s the emissary of the king and has been sent to check out the man’s sister as a possible candidate for marriage to his king. Something funny is going on and he’s about to find out what through a rather unusual means. He’s a shape shifter, but he’s only able to do that for a limited period of time. That time is now, but unfortunately the only thing he can get near enough to shift into is the rats… but beggars can’t be choosers.
Tabica is a slave to Lord Lerae, and she’s learned to live with her hard life a long time ago, regardless of what happens. When she sees a rat get captured that most definitely is not what it seems, she decides to rescue it from someone intent on putting it out of it’s misery. Little does she know just how much that one move will change her life…
Ok, I’ll admit it… at first I didn’t think I was going to like Gilrohan, the main character, because he seemed a little flighty. I soon found out that it wasn’t really his personality; he turned out to be a pretty great guy in the end. In the story, his sometimes flighty behavior was supposedly because it was how he was known at court, but he didn’t act like that at all, and because of that sometimes the inconsistencies of Gilrohan’s personality bothered me off and on. It was almost like every once in a while the character threw something in to remind you he was supposed to be flighty, sort of like an after thought. The chemistry between Gilrohan and Tabica doesn’t really get cooking until about halfway through the book, then it really sizzled, and all the emotion came pouring through. Tabica is an interesting character, she’s practical and understands just what she needs to get along in her world and is a pretty strong individual because of it, which is really what made the whole story work for me. I thought that Revealing Skills was a great book, and I would certainly pick up another one of Devon Summer’s wonderful stories.
