Precious Ramotswe is a detective with an agency in Botswana Africa. She has everything she needs to do her job – a van, two desks, two chairs, a telephone, a typewriter, a teapot and three mugs. Her theory that a detective agency needed nothing else really gives a strong insight into the character who drives this wonderful book.
Mma Ramotswe loves Africa. She loves helping people find things they’ve lost and is very good at it. She tackles various cases in the course of the book, but the charm of it isn’t her cases – it’s her personality. She’s lived a hard life, as do many of those around her but instead of making her a victim it’s made her who she is, and that’s a delight.
Alexander McCall Smith has written a wonderful book that has since become a series with about 6 books to its credit. The strength of the story is the locale and our main character, and after reading this book you’ll feel you know both intimately. You won’t find fast-paced adventure or exciting drama here – instead you’ll become a part of Mma Ramotswe’s life, which I guarantee will draw you in. I highly recommend this book.
