A HUSBAND FOR ALL SEASONS by Irene Brand

This riveting book starts with an adopted man, Chad Reese, a well known football star, in hospital calling for help and unable to move. A hospital volunteer, Vicky Lanham, calms his fears. A doctor comes in to discuss his prognosis with him. He’s lost a kidney and he only had one to begin with. The doctor explains that due to the severity of the situation he’s already been given a kidney transplant and that his football career must end.  He is angered and hurt that his world is suddenly turned upside down.  Vicky Lanham was asked once again to sit with Chad. He had refused the company of anyone he knows including his parents. Chad and Vicky begin a beautiful friendship. Chad begins to explain the betrayal he feels from everyone he thought was so close to him. He also tells of the guilt he feels for not being able to continue being a football star.

Chad closes himself off from all family and friends. He is soon to be released from the hospital, so Vicky comes to visit and offers to assist him in finding a place to stay.  Vicky is the only friend he has in this new place as he turns away from everything of his old life.  And strangely she seems to understand him better than most due to her past.

After several weeks Chad realizes at some time he will have to face his past. He finally has his mail forwarded to his new location. Imagine his shock when he arrives at the post office and is told it is three huge bags. He has multiple letters from his friends, and his agent. Chad asks Vicky and his landlady, Grace to assist him going through all of that mail. It seems overwhelming and Chad decides the real world is simply too much so he acquires a camper and decides to camp in a rural park.

That’s where Chad runs into a man named, Oliver. Oliver is a missionary of sorts who just goes where God leads. With the help of hearing Oliver’s life story, Chad realizes he hasn’t truly relied on God for his future. Chad for the first time sees that he must walk by faith. At this point Chad starts to slowly rebuild his relationship with his parents and his biological parents. Chad realizes he wasn’t abandoned by God just given a new direction. His relationship with Vicky progresses and they continue to rely on each other as good friends do.

The book is fabulous. When you think you know what’s going to happen you really don’t. The relationship between the characters in the book makes you feel like you really know them. It’s an amazing process to watch the characters grow and learn in their spiritual walk. You find yourself wanting to grow along with them and draw closer to God as well.
