Shayla is desperate for a job. If she doesn’t find one, she will be kicked out of her apartment and forced to live in subsidized housing, something she definitely doesn’t want to do with her empathic talent. She’s an actress, and while she’s had some bit parts she hasn’t been able to make a living at it. She’s been finding it a challenge anyway, because being an empath is illegal on Jheknan. In order to hide her talent she spends a lot of time by herself, and that’s not always easy to do. Now she’s willing to try anything, and is going for an interview at an unusual job… spying.
Gavin has been undercover for a long time, but not only for the Jheknan security agency, for his own people the Sirens. They’ve been persecuted over the years, and they are looking for another place to live so they can be free. Part of his mission will be to see if they are able to on the planet that the Jheknan have marked as their own. If it is, they have to do everything in their power to prevent restrictive Jheknan’s from taking over. Having to drag along an inexperienced agent along is going to be very difficult, and he wants no part of it. Until he meets Shayla…
There’s a lot going on in this intense story. It’s got plenty of action and intrigue, to the point that sometimes it made me loose track of the couple’s romance. I liked Shayla, she’d had to live through some tough times, but managed to pull herself up and move on without falling apart. I liked Gavin too; I thought he was a wonderful hero that had a lot of great qualities. The two characters had a lot of chemistry together, and I looked forward to seeing how it all worked out. Although it started out quick, I thought that the relationship portion of the story kind of dragged a little bit, although the action moved forward pretty quick. There was so much time spent building up the plot and the relationship that when it happened I was looking for more. Overall, I still think that it was a fun story to read that had me looking for more from this talented author. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
