During the Second World War, Samuel and Julia a Wortham and their family live on a farm in southern Illinois. Their only son, Robert, enlists to fight for their country shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. His friend, Willy Hammond, whose two brothers are already in the service, enlists with him. This is the story of those left at home and how their lives interact in trying times. It is told from three first-person points of view: Julia Wortham; her 16-year-old daughter, Sarah; and 18-year-old Frank Hammond.
George Hammond, the Wortham’s nearest neighbor, is a widower with ten children. The Worthams have had a major part in raising Hammond’s sons and daughters, especially the younger ones. George turns to alcohol in his grief and when his son Joe is reported missing in action, he becomes severely depressed and irrational.
Julia receives a letter from Robert which includes a prayer from his girlfriend Rachel, a prayer that God would give them peace while they are apart, make them stronger, and give them a greater understanding of Himself.
Many characters were introduced in the first few chapters, including several children, and it was hard at first to keep them all straight. However, the author portrays the different voices of her main characters well and gives the reader a glimpse into their thoughts and emotions. Kelly illuminates the contrasts between personalities and lifestyles: victories and defeats, faith and despair, loving care and neglect.
I enjoyed reading about Julia’s strength, faith and love for her family. Sarah’s coming of age was touching, and Frank’s spiritual journey was inspiring. I even sympathized with headstrong and flighty Rorey Hammond.
Rachel’s Prayer is the second book in the Country Road Chronicles series. Rorey’s Secret is Book One. Also look for Leisha Kelly’s other novels: Julia’s Hope, Katie’s Dream, and Emma’s Gift.
