1884 - Rennesle - Chateau, France
Marie Denarnaud and her family are forced to move here after their home burns to the ground. The people in the village give them a cool welcome. This all changes when a new priest, Berenger Sauniere has been assigned to their church. He is living temporary staying with Marie and her family while the presbytery is restored. Marie knows he is off-limits because he is a man of the cloth, she can not help herself, she is attracted to him, and she thinks he is attracted to him as well. They will need to keep their feelings hidden or it could cause dire consequences for both of them. When Berenger becomes secretive about items he has found in the presbytery, this only fuels Marie’s interest more,
Berenger Sauniere has a good reason to keep the items secret from Marie and everyone else. What he has found could rock the church off its foundation. He has found reference to a possible child born to Mary and Jesus, which would mean there is a bloodline out there. He also has strong feelings for Marie. He fights those feelings; he could be kicked out of the church if he acted on the feelings.
Marie and Berenger play a cat and mouse game with each other. They play down their feelings for each other, even though it is obvious they care for one other. Marie does some digging around on her own to find out why Berenger is being so secretive, what she discovers rocks her to her core. She wonders if this possibly be true about a bloodline.
This was an amazing book. There was romance, mystery, intrigue. The characters of Marie and Berenger are based on actual people; they did live in Rennes-le-Chateau in the 19th century.
