DAYLIGHT COMES by Judith Miller

Nicodemus, Kansas 1882

Truth Wyman is very concerned her husband; Moses will win the election for State Auditor. If he does, they will have to move to Topeka, Kansas. She does not want to move from her home, her family, and her friends. There is also another reason she does not want to move, she has just learned she is expecting her first child. How can Moses expect her to give birth and raise their child in unfamiliar surroundings? She has thought about staying where she is, while her husband moves to Topeka, but she knows that would not work.

Hill City, Kansas 1882

Marcia Boyle is just not the same young woman she was before her trip to Europe. It was suppose to last only for two weeks. It lasted two years! She has come back only to discover Jeb Malone has been keeping company with Fern Kingston, the Boyle’s housekeeper. There has to be a way she can convince Jeb they still have a chance. When Marcia realizes Fern has destroyed her best dress and has been treating Jeb’s younger sister harshly, she is certain she belongs with Jeb.

This is a story of two towns, Nicodemus, Kansas, mostly made up of African-Americans with a few whites sprinkled in. Hill City, Kansas mostly with whites, with the African-Americans as housekeepers and such. Even though they are two separate towns, each town suffers the same problems. Each town is hoping the railroad will be coming through their town; it could help keep the towns going. If the railroad does not go through it could mean the end of the line for both Nicodemus and Hill City.

This is the final book of the series. It could be read on its own. To appreciate the story it would benefit the reader to read the books in order of publication. It is a thought provoking, well plotted, extremely well written series by a multi talented author.

Historical Note: Nicodemus still exists today. There are about thirty hardy souls trying to keep it alive.
