THINGS TO DO by Nell Dixon

THINGS TO DO starts out as many chick lit books do – our travel agent heroine Emma is in a situation out of her control, she’s surrounded by unique characters who either take advantage of her or are her life-long chums – or both, and she’s self-depreciating, making her quite adorable and funny. But this book soon veers off the beaten path, maintaining it’s true British flavour while embracing a romantic suspense story line that, while obvious, is still engaging and entertaining.

Emma, it turns out, is married. She hasn’t seen her husband Marco since the honeymoon, when she caught him sleeping with another woman in Antigua. Now he’s in London, living in her flat, sleeping in her bed. Suddenly there are middle of the night phone calls, suspicious friends, oodles of money and long disappearances, telling Emma that her husband is probably up to no good. Her normally boring, completely safe life is spiraling out of her control.

I completely enjoyed THINGS TO DO. It’s written in first person, which I love when it’s well done, and this is. Emma is human, as are her family and friends, and each had their own story, which really enhanced the main story rather than overpowering it. The author has a knack for giving a strong sense of character and location without a lot of explanation, leaving it to her characters to do that for her.

For a funny, exciting and romantic story, I wholeheartedly recommend THINGS TO DO.
