East Texas - June 1932
Marcie Fletcher carries a heavy burden for someone so young; her father is dead, her mother has been in some sort of self-imposed trance since her husband’s death. Marcie has been caring for her younger brothers and sister by herself. She just can not do herself any longer. She decides to post a note at the general store for a husband and someone to help work the farm. She really does not think anyone will answer; everyone is having troubles in this terrible depression.
Wesley Nelson had been in prison for nine years for a crime he did not commit. When he was released, he stayed at his sister’s place; he was no longer welcomed there. He decides to ride the rails. He travels from town to town; he works when there is work to be found. He arrived in town asking people if they needed any help with anything, he was willing to work for food and lodging, no takers. He spots the notice Marcie put up, why not, he has nothing else to loose.
Marcie and Wesley both need this agreement to work out. They agree to take is slow in the romance department since this is a business arrangement. As they get to know each other, feelings develop for each other. Wesley has been very good with Marcie’s siblings; he was extremely gentle with Jane, he worked as hard as any man Marcie has seen. When he is arrested for a rape Marcie knows he did not commit, it will be up to her and the Lord to prove he did not do this terrible crime.
This was an incredible love story. Two people each need something the other had. Wesley had a way with people, he was patient, caring, never raised his voice. With Marcie being so young, she had a good head on her shoulders. She did what she had to in order to keep her family together in this trying period. This is Jan Richardson’s second novel.
