Wildfires spark all around Arizona. Special Smoke Jumpers continually put their lives on the line jumping into the fires to extinguish them behind the lines. Tess Masterson makes the first jump with good friend Allie, who really wanted to forgo the jump to be with her grieving boyfriend. In addition to that, Allie jumps with Tess’s parachute. A tragedy hits and Tess is hit with a tremendous amount of guilt. On top of that, Tess had hoped to be assigned far away from the family ranch, but their leader has made it possible for Tess close. When Tess arrives at the Family ranch she’s greeted by a fresh set of challenges and we wonder how this woman is going to deal with all of it without going nuts.
Serial arsonist The Fire Dancer seems to be the cause of the sweeping wildfires ruining more property and putting the smoke jumpers at more risk than any fire ‘season’ before.
We don’t learn who the Fire Dancer really is or how he/she and Tess are connected, if at all, until later in the book. To tell much more of the story would take away from the pace and suspense of this thriller, so suffice to say, if you’re a Colleen Coble fan and liked her first series, you will not be disappointed with this one. I have to say, however, that the knowledge she writes with about smoke jumping, marked me feel like I was in the plane, soaring through the air, and landing with the rest of the group. Colleen writes with skill and makes the reader turn page after page wanting to know what happens, while fearful about what that might be.
A great read!
