It’s 1940 and much sheltered Amalie Breaux, whose old-world father thinks women, (especially his daughter), should behave in a certain manner, thirsts for the big life in Hollywood. When Amalie continually steps outside the families boundaries to explore her dream of being a Hollywood movie star father confines her to her room. Amalie feels she is an adult and can do what she wants so she runs away and arrives in Hollywood.
Hollywood isn’t all bright lights and glitter. When Amalie arrives she is mugged, but even then Amalie is sure God wants her to be in the movies that she intends to follow him even if life is perilous.
Rob Tratelli, the handsome son of famous Christian movie producers who happen to also be evangelical Christians, Rob is tired of the hype that goes with the ‘glamorous’ Hollywood lifestyle. He’s been used by many a starlet because of who his parents are. Rob works in a diner and soon meets Amalie who also works there. Rob keeps his rue identity hidden. And then when they fall in love, he is fearful she will love him for the wrong reasons or that she’ll hate him because he’s lied to her.
Rob and Amalie are destined to be together but it sure isn’t going to be easy getting to that place.
I’ve not read many Heartsongs Presents books, but this one was delightful. Amalie is a sweet spunky (although I wish there were a different word for it!) heroine who we simultaneously root for and warn. Rob is a strong hero and we want them to finally find the love they both seek, although both may not be aware that is what they seek, it truly is.
Y’arbo is a gifted writer who knows how to build the angst and deliver a satisfying ending.
