JUST LIKE A DAME by Daisy Dexter Dobbs

Veterinarian Max Wiley wakes up in the middle of the night to pounding at his front door from his neighbor Angel Brewster. He had been dreaming of an angel and opens the door and there she is, a beautiful Rubenesque woman. She thinks she’s killed Henry. Max wonders if this is a case of domestic abuse. He goes to assist Angel and finds out Henry is her cocker spaniel. Max thinks his curvy blonde neighbor is a nut. Max has a 3-legged dog he adopted named Spill which is a nickname for Mickey Spillane. Angel thinks Max is a male chauvinist. Max learns Angel writes a feminist column for Women’s Wit & Wisdom Magazine. Max writes crime fiction about Private Detective Jack Clyde which Angel hates. He writes under the name of Frank Coleman. This book has a lot of zany characters, a lot of heat between Angel and Max and it seems they can’t resist each other.

The story of Angel and Max has a lot of comedy and incredibly entertaining characters, including the dogs Henry and Spill. There is always some sort of chaos going on. One of the funniest things Max and Angel have in common is both have parents who believe their child is gay. Additional entertainment is provided by Angel’s 5 brothers and Dominick and Francesca Spinelli, owners of Max’s favorite restaurant and friends who are like family. My favorite part of the story which also made me cry was Max’s romantic gesture toward Angel about her collections. I loved the characters of Max and Angel and their story is a very explicit romantic one beautifully written by Ms. Dobbs. Now I must read more books by Ms. Dobbs because her characterizations in a romantic comedy setting are completely hilarious and delightful.
