For sixteen years Talaith lived with a man she called husband, although no vows have ever been spoken. Trapped in a loveless union, she never expected said ‘husband’ to try to kill her. Blamed for everything that went wrong in her tiny village, a mob decided to take action and solve all their problems. By escorting her to her own execution! Near death, Talaith watched as a silver dragon calmly walked out of the forest and came to her rescue. Which was worse? Killed by a mob or being eaten by a dragon?
Briec the Mighty was sent to collect information on the ruling lord then return home. He never expected to find an entire village trying to kill a woman. Intrigued by the unusual scenario, Briec took the enchanting woman for his own. Dragon law stated that any life he saved was his until he decided otherwise. He knew exactly where he wanted Talaith … in his bed and in his arms -even if she was human. A few centuries should quench his appetite. But the more he came to know the sharp tongue witch, the more he wanted her. Will a few hundred years be enough to work her out of his system? He was more than willing to keep her and find out.
Only things don’t go as planned. Talaith knew she could not give Briec forever. She might come to care for him, maybe more than she should, but her life was not her own. In a world where dragons lived and gods and goddesses ruled, Talaith pledged her life to a vindictive goddess in order to save an innocent child. To make good her promise, she must leave Briec and his care. Brought together weeks later by a twist of fate, Talaith cannot believe the changes in either of them. Will those change be enough for one arrogant dragon and one suborn witch to admit their feelings? Or will outside forces once again tear them apart, this time forever?
I absolutely adore this novel. The humor was both witty and sharp, perfectly matching Talaith and Briecs personalities. With a combination of compelling characters, a unique story, and clean writing, I couldn’t put the book down and ended staying up until two in the morning. More than once, I had to stop and remind myself that I was supposed to be reviewing the book. The romance was unique to these characters. Not only did Talaith and Briec make me smile, the secondary characters appealed to me also. I would highly recommend The Distressing Damsel to anyone who wanted to read a story that combined humor, drama, wit, steamy romance and enough suspense to keep till the last page. I immediately wanted to go out and buy the full series.
