This is the story of Martha Sawyer and the challenges, grief, love, loss and hardships she faced as a farmer’s wife on Yellow Mountain in Kentucky. The story begins in 1922. Martha and husband Elijah had two daughters, Vinie and Gracie. They were farmers. Elijah had taken off for a few days to help a neighbor remove some stumps. He never returned and was believed drowned in the Ohio River. Elijah’s body was never found. Martha continued on taking in sewing jobs to support her family. She met and married Nero Neeley. They had three more children, Ogie, Stella and Jimmy. Nero worked driving a coal truck and Martha worked in the local sewing factory. A tragedy occurs and suddenly Elijah reappears after an 8 year absence.
This story will touch all your emotions. It is a wonderful story about several generations of very strong Southern women. I loved the character Martha. She is strong, proud, courageous, loving. The story is based on a real family and real people although some of the names have been changed. I found myself completely caught up in the day-to-day lives of the people in and around Yellow Mountain, Kentucky. This book will really touch your heart.
